THE DAY I OPENED THE SECOND PACK OF WEED

When I arrived in Croatia I brought with me two packages of yerba mate. And it was there where, without knowing it, it all began.

One was for me. The other was for a person I had talked to for months before traveling. We had never met, but we shared something very common among those who emigrate: the need to understand what it is like to start over in another country.

A kind of invisible alliance is sometimes created between foreigners. People who do not yet know each other, but who accompany each other in uncertainty.

Before traveling he asked me for a simple favor: if I could bring him a kilo of weed, because in Croatia it was difficult to get.

So I arrived with two packages.

But when I finally set foot in the country, that person was gone. He had received a job offer elsewhere and had moved. We continued talking on the phone sometimes, but we never met.

The second package of weed was saved.

Meanwhile, mine took care of him like a little treasure. He drank mate very rarely, perhaps twice a month, as if it were a ritual reserved for special moments. It was a way to keep something familiar close in the middle of a new world.

The other package continued to wait for a year.

Until one day I understood something simple: that meeting was probably not going to happen anytime soon. So I did something that seemed small, but for me was deeply symbolic.

I opened the second package.

That gesture marked a turning point. It was accepting that my life was here and that it was time to open myself to building bonds in this new land.

It was also when I realized something very specific: getting weed in Croatia was not easy. And instead of keeping it as something scarce, I began to wonder what would happen if that ritual could be shared.

At that moment I was going through an intense personal process. I had arrived with a university profession and a career that, for a time, was put on hold while I learned a new language, understood other cultural codes and looked for my place in a different environment.
